These special appliances which are attached with bands to the teeth widens the roof of your mouth or on status stay as a retainer. It is sometimes necessary to expand the upper jaw for a proper fit with the lower jaw or make room for crowded teeth.
1. Rapid Palatal Expander:
Effectively stretches the roof of the mouth by gently separating the upper arch in the centre of your palate. It will take approximately two months but the appliance remains in the mouth longer while the new bone is generating in your expanded arch.
You will feel possibly some initial discomfort and “pressure” which will cause a tingling or itch under your special appliance. You also will see a temporary space between your two front teeth.
2. Quad-Helix:
The appliance is used for expansion of the upper dental arch and produce buccal tipping of the teeth providing enough space to straighten your teeth. The loops keep the appliance more flexible to transmit gentle force to the teeth.
This all wire fixed orthodontic appliance is attached to the upper first molars.
B, Palatal Bar:
An archwire along the contour of the palate, to the maxillary first molar on the opposite side. The appliance can be activated for limited expansion or commonly use for anchorage reinforcement mainly to keep the upper molars in position after expansion.
